Oman Celebrates International Biodiversity Day

Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman is joining the worldwide celebration of International Biodiversity Day, which is observed yearly on May 22 to promote a healthy balance between humans and the environment and raise public awareness about the need of biodiversity preservation under the theme Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development.

The festival honors global attempts to conserve biodiversity and protect wildlife, emphasizing the importance of ecosystems in tackling environmental, climatic, and economic issues.

Oman's Environment Authority has placed a strong emphasis on biodiversity conservation through several field research aimed at studying biodiversity across a variety of habitats in all of Oman's governorates.

The government implements plans and programs to preserve biodiversity and protect endangered species, including developing a national biodiversity strategy and action plan, undertaking wildlife surveys to evaluate the state of biodiversity, conducting environmental studies on arthropods across Oman's ecosystems, and assessing the status of endangered plant and animal species in the nation.

Biodiversity preservation is viewed as an environmental responsibility as well as a strategic investment in human health, the economy, and society, resulting in a flexible future that can adapt to worldwide challenges while maintaining a balance between resource exploitation and conservation.

Notably, Oman's attempts to conserve biodiversity are consistent with the goals of Oman Vision 2040, which prioritizes environmental sustainability in the country's development strategies.
