New Cyber Fraud Detected In Oman, Warns ROP And CBO

Muscat: The Royal Oman Police (ROP) in collaboration with the Central Bank of Oman (CBO) has issued a public warning concerning a new fraudulent scheme facilitated through social media platforms, which misleads individuals into believing that the CBO is offering an opportunity to access easy loan facilities and encourages their participation by linking to external websites.

In a formal notification, the Royal Oman Police has stated: "The ROP has been informed of a novel fraudulent scheme wherein fraudsters impersonate the Central Bank of Oman on various social media platforms (including WhatsApp, Snapchat, and Instagram). Their objective is to lure individuals with the promise of generous loan offers. The fraudsters deceive the public into providing personal and banking details via an external link. Subsequently, they exploit this information to drain the victims' bank accounts."

The Royal Oman Police is advising both citizens and residents to dismiss these communications and refrain from engaging with any external links until they are confident in their legitimacy. It is also emphasized that the public should avoid sharing any personal information or banking details on social media. It should be noted that the Central Bank of Oman does not provide personal or housing loans, or any other banking services to the public.
