Muscat Expressway To Have 12 Lanes, Set To Become Oman’s Widest Road

Muscat: The Chairman of Muscat Municipality, Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Humaidi, has hailed the Muscat Expressway project's expansion as a major milestone following the announcement of a tender for the project on Wednesday.

This ambitious project is expected to greatly improve the main traffic artery of the capital city, leading to smoother traffic flow for both individuals and the transportation of goods.

Al Humaidi stated, "The expansion of the Muscat Expressway project represents a significant step forward in enhancing connectivity throughout the various regions of the capital. It aims to increase the capacity to meet the growing demands of the transportation sector, aligning closely with the country's path of urban and economic development."

He expressed confidence in the project's importance and emphasized its crucial role in achieving the objectives outlined in Oman Vision 2040.

By providing the necessary infrastructure for future development, this vital project is poised to propel the nation towards its aspirations.

The expansion will include the addition of three lanes in each direction, effectively widening the road to accommodate twelve lanes, making it the widest road in the Sultanate.

Moreover, the project involves improving the effectiveness of various multi-level intersections, expanding acceleration and deceleration lanes connected to the expressway, enhancing current bridges, and establishing necessary drainage channels and slope protections.

Additionally, it covers essential elements like road surfacing, service re-routing activities, installation of concrete barriers, and the adoption of an eco-friendly LED lighting system to replace the existing lighting infrastructure.

The opening of the Muscat Expressway during the nation's 40th National Day festivities in 2010 represented a significant milestone. Acting as a driver for connectivity between residential and commercial centers in the capital, it greatly reduced traffic congestion along Sultan Qaboos Street.
