Itin Tunnel Project In Salalah Opened For Traffic

Muscat: On Saturday, the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology officially opened the Itin Tunnel project in Salalah Wilayat, allowing vehicle traffic. The project, worth over OMR 11 million, is part of the ministry's continuous efforts to improve infrastructure and expand the road network in the Dhofar Governorate.

Engineer Saeed bin Mohammed Tabook, Director General of the Dhofar Directorate General of Roads and Land Transport, told the Oman News Agency that the project has been fast-tracked, with a completion percentage of roughly 97%—an impressive 24% higher than the planned timeframe.

He emphasised that the job was done by a local business, highlighting the high level of expertise and competence in Omani national firms.

The project includes a roadway network of more than 9 kilometres. Among its features is a dual carriageway tunnel that is 1. 35 kilometres long.

Additionally, 18th November Street has been enlarged to four lanes in each way for a length of 2. 7 kilometers.

The development also includes bypass roads in four directions in total, each measuring 1. 3 kilometres in length, as well as the construction of seven service roads and numerous access and exit points to enhance traffic flow and ease of movement.

The Itin Tunnel is regarded as a significant improvement to Salalah's infrastructure. It is anticipated to greatly minimize traffic congestion, especially during the Khareef (monsoon) season, which is marked by increased activity in the governorate. Furthermore, the project is expected to improve road safety, boost economic growth, and adapt for the region's continued urban and demographic expansion.
