Microsoft To Invest $3 Billion In India To Expand AI, Cloud Infra

Bengaluru: Microsoft plans to invest $3 billion in India over the next two years to enhance its cloud and AI infrastructure, as announced by chairman and CEO Satya Nadella during the Microsoft AI Tour in Bengaluru.

This investment will involve the creation of new data centers and the acceleration of AI innovation within the country. Microsoft has outlined an extensive initiative to train and equip 10 million individuals with skills by 2030, underscoring its dedication to collaborating with India in the technology sector.

The company stated, "Microsoft will also bolster the nation's long-term competitiveness by providing AI skills training to 10 million people over the next five years, as part of the second phase of its ADVANTA(I)GE India program." Nadella emphasized that the announced investments in infrastructure and training reaffirm Microsoft's commitment to making India a leader in AI, ensuring widespread benefits for individuals and organizations throughout the nation.

"India is swiftly emerging as a frontrunner in AI innovation, creating new opportunities across the country," Nadella remarked.

Microsoft will enhance its cloud and AI infrastructure through the development of data center campuses nationwide. Currently, the company operates three data center regions, with a fourth set to launch in 2026. This latest investment aims to establish a scalable AI computing ecosystem to support the increasing demands of India's burgeoning AI start-ups and research community.

As job roles evolve, proficiency in AI is becoming a crucial skill for professionals. In a separate meeting, Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged with Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella in the national capital to discuss various facets of technology, innovation, and AI.

Microsoft has been active in India for over three decades.

Puneet Chandok, President of Microsoft India and South Asia, stated, "Over the past year, Microsoft has played a pivotal role in transforming AI from a concept into reality across India, impacting various sectors from education to commerce, and from finance to agriculture. Today's announcement reinforces our confidence in India's potential and our commitment to providing the necessary resources and skills for the country to thrive in the global economy. We will persist in leveraging AI to create opportunities for the coming decades, ensuring that communities nationwide have the computing resources required to thrive in the age of AI."
