Muscat: The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources has confirmed that wheat production has increased significantly in Oman’s several governorates since the start of the local wheat support plan in 2023.

This initiative is part of broader national efforts to improve food security and self-sufficiency in basic grains.

The ministry specified that overall production for the 20242025 season amounted 10,128. 341 tons, with a market value of RO 3,038,502, grown across 8,327 acres.

Dhofar Governorate produced 76% of Oman's total wheat output this year, totaling 7,723 tonnes, followed by Al Dhahirah Governorate with 1,118 tonnes and Al Dakhiliyah Governorate with 877. 185 tonnes, while the remaining amounts were distributed among other governorates.

Dr. Khair Tuwair Al Busaidi, Director of the Palm and Plant Production Department at the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources, stated that the local wheat support plan is intended to strengthen food security systems in accordance with the goals of "Oman Vision 2040. "

This, he noted, is accomplished by allowing farmers to grow high-yield, high-quality improved wheat types, assisting them in harvesting operations, and providing technical and advisory support.

He went on to say that the ministry, in collaboration with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning, is increasing wheat production by designating new agricultural areas for wheat cultivation and providing them as usufruct lands to farmers and investors.

Dr. Al Busaidi confirmed that the ministry's research centers continue to advance wheat agriculture, enhance local types, and introduce new strains suited to Oman's climate while maintaining great production and quality.

He told the Oman News Agency (ONA) that the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources' fruitful cooperation and partnership with Oman Flour Mills Company have significantly contributed to the sustainability of wheat production.

This collaboration has motivated farmers to continue wheat production and take advantage of the assistance plan.

The business buys Omani wheat from farmers on an annual basis as part of its commitment to developing local wheat and marketing it as an Omani product in the domestic and regional markets.
