Legendary Indian Actor Manoj Kumar Passes Away At 87

Mumbai: Renowned actor and filmmaker Manoj Kumar, a prominent figure in Indian cinema, passed away on April 4, 2025, at the age of 87.

Affectionately referred to as "Bharat Kumar" for his numerous patriotic portrayals, he died at 4:03 am at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai.

Medical reports indicated that his death was due to cardiogenic shock resulting from an acute myocardial infarction, a serious heart attack.

Additionally, it was noted that Kumar had been struggling with decompensated liver cirrhosis in the months leading up to his passing, which had significantly impacted his health.

He had been hospitalized since February 21, 2025, after his condition deteriorated.

Born Harikrishan Goswami on July 24, 1937, in Amritsar, Punjab, Manoj Kumar established himself as a key player in Hindi cinema.

His memorable performances in films such as Shaheed, Upkar, and Rang De Basanti struck a chord with the patriotic feelings of the Indian audience.

Over the course of his career, Kumar gained recognition for both his acting and directing, often focusing on themes of national pride and unity.

Kumar's impact on Indian cinema has garnered him numerous esteemed awards, including a National Film Award and seven Filmfare Awards across various categories.

In acknowledgment of his significant contributions to the arts in India, the Government of India honored him with the Padma Shri in 1992.

His legacy was further cemented when he received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2015, the highest honor in Indian cinema.

The announcement of his death has reverberated throughout the film industry, prompting many to express their sorrow and pay tribute to his enduring legacy.

Filmmaker Ashoke Pandit also shared his condolences regarding the loss of the iconic actor.

In a statement to ANI, he remarked, "It is with great sadness that I inform you all of the passing of the legendary Dadasaheb Phalke Award recipient, our inspiration, and a pillar of the Indian film industry, Shri Manoj Kumarji. He passed away at Kokilaben Hospital in Andheri after a prolonged illness. This is a tremendous loss for the industry; we will truly miss Manojji."

He continued, "We would often meet him, and he was always vibrant and cheerful. The entire industry will feel his absence. A remarkable soul and a great creator like him will be irreplaceable in our field. Farewell, Manojji."
