Jaishankar Highlights Interplay Between Trade And Tech At 9th Global Tech Summit

New Delhi: On Friday, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar addressed the 9th Carnegie Global Tech Summit, discussing the ongoing global transformations, their technological implications, and the numerous opportunities they present. He also examined the relationship between trade and technology, among other topics.

In a post on X, he expressed his satisfaction in participating in the summit and engaging in a thought-provoking dialogue with Rudra C. He emphasized the significant global changes, their technological impacts, and the various possibilities that arise. He also underscored the critical relationship between trade and technology, the necessity for trustworthy and transparent digital practices, and the need to adapt to the evolving global environment.

During his remarks at the summit, Jaishankar noted that the world is entering a phase marked by intense competition and rivalry. He described the need for enhanced cooperation between nations, particularly the US and China, as akin to a Goldilocks dilemma.

"And even more challenging is the prospect of deep collaboration between the US and China, where being on the wrong side could be detrimental for us. Neither scenario is favorable. It resembles a Goldilocks problem; we seek an optimal situation, but they are unlikely to accommodate the rest of the world," he stated.

He further elaborated that the nature of international relations has become increasingly personal, indicating that the dynamics extend beyond mere trade. "It will be significantly more challenging now, as we can no longer isolate sectors by claiming they are solely trade-related. The lines have blurred; nothing is purely trade anymore. All investments carry complexities; nothing is strictly business. Everything has personal implications," he remarked.

Jaishankar remarked that Europe has enjoyed a prolonged period of peace, which is now being disrupted.

"We are undoubtedly entering an era marked by intense competition and rivalry. Countries must prepare for this shift, and such preparation will be significantly more challenging," he stated.
