In A First, Oman Tests Eco-Friendly Rubberised Asphalt For Roads

Muscat: The Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology has initiated a pilot project in the Wilayat of Bidiyah, North Al Sharqiyah Governorate, focusing on the use of rubber-modified asphalt for road paving. This advanced asphalt formulation is recognized for its superior flexibility and resistance to cracking, wear, and thermal stress, which collectively contribute to an extended lifespan for the roads. Additionally, it promotes the recycling of used tires, thereby mitigating environmental pollution.

Abdulaziz bin Fahd Al Nasiri, the Director of the Roads Department in North Al Sharqiyah Governorate, detailed that this innovative approach employs rubber-modified asphalt that includes SBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene) rubber polymer, glass fibers, and nanomaterials. The ministry aims to enhance the durability of roads while minimizing the frequency and costs associated with maintenance.

Furthermore, this initiative supports environmental sustainability by incorporating plastic waste and tire rubber, which aids in reducing carbon dioxide emissions, improving shock absorption, decreasing noise pollution, and enhancing the road's capacity to endure heavy traffic loads. The implementation of rubber-modified roads marks a significant progression in contemporary road construction practices.
