Good Progress Made In OMR160m Projects To Construct Hospitals, Health Centres In Dhofar

Salalah: Significant advancements have been achieved in the construction of various projects aimed at establishing, developing, and expanding nine hospitals and health centers across the wilayats of Dhofar Governorate. These initiatives, totaling an investment of OMR160 million, are being executed by the Ministry of Health.

The Ministry of Health has announced that the construction projects currently underway in Dhofar Governorate encompass the development of three new hospitals in the Wilayats of Salalah, Maqshan, and Thumrait, alongside the expansion of Taqah Hospital and Awqad Health Centre (Phase II).

Furthermore, the Ministry is involved in several other projects, including the establishment of a health center in the Wilayat of Shaleem W’al-Halaniyat Islands, Mudhi Health Centre in the Wilayat of Thumrait, the inauguration of Al Mazyouna Hospital, and the completion of expansion works at the Western Salalah (Salalah Al Gharbia) Health Centre.

In the coming two years, from 2025 to 2026, the Ministry of Health plans to undertake 10 additional projects in Dhofar Governorate with the objective of enhancing the efficiency of existing health institutions to accommodate the growing population in other wilayats and governorates.

Eng. Yousef Yaqoub Ambu-Ali, the Director General of Projects and Engineering Services at the Ministry of Health, reported to the Oman News Agency (ONA) that the construction of the new Sultan Qaboos Hospital in Salalah has achieved a completion rate of 48 percent. This project, with an investment of OMR138 million, features state-of-the-art medical equipment and includes specialized clinics, treatment units, and pathology labs.

He further mentioned that the Ministry has successfully expanded a health center in Western Salalah (Salalah Al Gharbia), with the project costing RO 59,000. Additionally, the Ministry is in the process of expanding Awqad Health Centre in the Wilayat of Salalah, with the construction rate currently at 25 percent.

He also highlighted that the project to upgrade “Thamrait Health Centre” into a local hospital has reached 60 percent of completion. This project, with an investment of RO 1.1 million, is supported by the Petroleum Development Oman (PDO).

Moreover, he stated that the construction of “Maqshan Hospital” in Dhofar Governorate is nearing its conclusion, with 99 percent of the project completed. The project, with an estimated cost of RO 1 million, is funded by the private sector under the Social Responsibility Programmes of PDO.

Construction activities are currently in progress to expand Taqah Hospital, with work reaching a 55 percent completion stage, as reported by the Director General of Projects and Engineering Services. The project is anticipated to be finalized by early 2025.

The establishment of the "Wilayat of Shaleem W’al Halaniyat Health Centre" is on the verge of completion, with 99 percent of the work completed. Ambu-Ali mentioned that the project, with a budget of RO 981,000, is projected to be operational by the end of 2024.

Furthermore, three new health centers are scheduled to be inaugurated in the Wilayat of Salalah, located in the districts of Sahalnout, Qairoun Hairiti, and Al Murooj. Ambu-Ali also highlighted that a project to establish Sadah Hospital is being considered for future implementation, with preliminary designs for the expansion of Mirbat Hospital also in progress.

Ambu-Ali further stated that tender documents are being prepared to enhance the efficiency of the "Shahab Asaib Health Centre" in the Wilayat of Rakhyut, aiming to elevate its status to that of a "local hospital."

He also mentioned that efforts are underway to finalize the contracting procedures for the establishment of Dhalkut Hospital. Additionally, the Ministry of Health is planning to establish the "western area hospital" (Al Mantika Al Gharbia Hospital) to cater to the needs of citizens and residents in the Wilayats of Rakhyut and Dhalkut, as well as parts of the Wilayat of Al Mazyouna, by the year 2025.

In the Dhofar Governorate, there exists a total of 45 health institutions, including the prestigious Sultan Qaboos Hospital in Salalah.
