The foundation stone for the first silicon metal factory in Sohar Free Zone, affiliated with the Green Ferro Alloys Company, was laid at a total cost estimated at $68 million. This significant milestone further solidifies Sohar Port and the Free Zone as a global trade hub, meeting the increasing demand for metallic silicon in Asia, Europe, and North America.
The ceremony, held under the patronage of His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed bin Sulaiman Al Kindi, Governor of North Al Batinah, was attended by various partners, the executive management of Sohar Port and Free Zone Company, and the Green Ferroalloys Company. The factory, spanning 160,000 square meters, will initially produce 25,000 tonnes of high-quality metallic silicon annually, with plans to increase production to 50,000 tons per year in the second phase. The production process involves pouring liquid metal silicon into molds, cooling it through molds or continuous casting, grinding, and packing for global export.
Governor Sheikh Mohammed bin Sulaiman Al Kindi emphasized the industrial sector's vital role in Oman's comprehensive development, highlighting the factory's strategic importance in the country's economic progress. The establishment of the Silicon metal factory not only enhances trade and investment opportunities but also paves the way for international cooperation in modern industries.
Omar bin Mahmoud Al Mahrezi, the CEO of Sohar Free Zone and Executive Vice President of the Port, emphasized the significance of commencing the construction of a silicon metal factory in the free zone. This milestone marks a crucial advancement towards our goal of sustainable growth and development. It also showcases the unwavering dedication of the region in efficiently and effectively supporting every phase of the project, from the initial signing stage to obtaining all necessary permits, and now reaching this pivotal stage.
