Environment Authority Attributes Death Of Sperm Whale In Barka To Natural Circumstances

The Environment Authority has stated that preliminary findings suggest the recent death of a sperm whale near the Al Sawadi area in the Wilayat of Barka was likely due to natural causes.

According to the authority, the whale, which was found washed ashore, measured over 15 meters in length. An autopsy revealed the presence of numerous parasites in its body, indicating that the whale was afflicted by a disease. Currently, samples from the whale are being analyzed at the laboratories of Sultan Qaboos University (SQU).

The Environment Authority has confirmed the whale's identity and is investigating the circumstances surrounding its death. In response, a specialized team was established to address the emergency situation. This team worked continuously for 55 hours to gather the necessary samples, after which the whale was buried in collaboration with various organizations.

It is important to note that sperm whales inhabit the deep waters of the Sea of Oman and the Arabian Sea. These whales can reach lengths of up to 18 meters and can weigh as much as 57,000 kilograms.
