Salalah - Dhofar Governorate has officially welcomed the celestial spring season, locally referred to as 'Sarb', which spans across the coastal regions of the governorate, from Dhalkut in the west to Mirbat in the east, extending until December 21.
The 'Sarb' season stands as one of the most exquisite natural phenomena in Dhofar Governorate, following the 'Khareef' period, characterized by a transition from a humid climate to a more temperate one.
The 'Sarb' season significantly contributes to the economic vitality of the governorate, owing to the surge in visitor numbers eager to revel in the natural splendor and partake in various recreational activities. This, in turn, bolsters the economic activities of local farmers, fishermen, and livestock breeders, particularly benefiting from the seasonal agricultural harvests in both mountainous and plain terrains, which rely on the autumn rains. These harvests include a variety of crops such as corn, local beans, and cucumbers, alongside a notable increase in honey production and the availability of a wide array of fish species, including sharka, kanaad fish, sardines, safi, and shaari, which are highly valued for their nutritional content.
The 'Sarb' season is also marked by the tradition of spring grazing (Khateel Al-Ibil), which commences in late September. Camel owners in the mountainous regions of Dhofar Governorate are particularly active during this period, orchestrating the movement of their herds from the plains or areas situated behind the mountains towards the pastures that come into existence with the onset of the autumn season. This process is accompanied by the singing of traditional songs and the recitation of poetic verses, enriched by cultural customs.
The 'Sarb' season in Dhofar Governorate is distinguished by a notable increase in the production of meat and honey, alongside dairy products and their derivatives, notably butter (Qatmim) and local ghee (Mishah), attributed to the lush green pastures available for livestock in the plains, plateaus, and mountains.
Furthermore, the mountainous areas of Dhofar Governorate emerge as premier tourist destinations during the 'Sarb' season, attracting a significant influx of visitors and tourists. This is due to the area's scenic beauty, moderate climate, expansive plains, and the presence of trees, which serve as a sanctuary for locals and residents seeking respite and enjoyment amidst the natural splendor.
Activities
In alignment with the "Marhaba Dhofar" event, the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism (MHT) facilitated collaborative sessions among partners within the tourism sector across the Sultanate of Oman and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This initiative, which was part of a broader engagement, saw the participation of over 40 tourism entities and 13 media professionals.
Furthermore, the Ministry orchestrated the "Dhofar Path 2024" event, a photography tourism forum. This forum was designed to bring together a group of professional photographers from the Sultanate of Oman and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region. The primary objective was to explore the natural beauty of Dhofar during the Sarb season, characterized by its vibrant colors and breathtaking landscapes.
In preparation for the future, the Ministry is set to unveil the third edition of the "Frankincense Season" events, scheduled for next December. This edition will feature sites from the UNESCO World Heritage List dedicated to frankincense.
Additionally, the Dhofar Municipality is orchestrating a series of events during the Sarab season, aimed at attracting visitors and tourists. These include the Dhofar Municipality Championship "Ironman 70.3," the Dhofar Municipality Championship "Salalah Half Marathon," and the "Dhofar Municipality She Runs" "Iron Child." These sporting events are scheduled to span two weeks in October, each with its unique program catering to various categories and serving the community in multiple ways. The municipality will also host the Dhofar International Theater Festival in early October, featuring performances by both local and international theater groups across various theatrical and artistic disciplines.
