Jakarta- The Sultanate of Oman's council joined the 19th session of the Conference of the Parliamentary Union of OIC Member States (PUIC), which began today in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Khalid Hilal Al Ma'awali, the Shura Council's Chairman, led Oman's team.
In his remarks at the start of the session, Al Ma'awali praised the conference's theme, "PUIC Silver Jubilee - Good Governance and Strong Institutions as Pillars of Resilience. "
This subject, according to Al Ma'awali, reflects our ambitions and demonstrates that national advancement can only be built on the foundations of justice, honesty, and openness. He also underlined the notion of good governance, which he believes has emerged as a foundation for progress, noting that nations are assessed not just by their natural resources, but also by how well they manage them through effective and independent institutions in which people trust.
He underlined that parliaments play an important role in sustaining the principles of justice, integrity, and transparency, as they are the institutions that create laws and regulate ideas of transparency and reform.
Al Ma'awali noted that the Sultanate of Oman's experience in fostering good governance has always been at the heart of policy development.
Through Oman Vision 2040, the administration placed strong emphasis on the notion of governance, recognizing its importance in driving total national development.
According to him, governance has been incorporated as a key guideline for improving institutional effectiveness and assuring openness and integrity in operations.
He stated that Oman Vision 2040 aims to build an integrated good governance system based on explicit concepts of accountability, justice, and the rule of law, while adopting the best administrative and technology practices to guarantee the quality and sustainability of government services.
The concept also emphasizes the value of including people in decision-making and striking a balance between economic progress and social development.
Al Ma'awali emphasized that, "In the midst of our focus on good governance and strong institutions as cornerstones of resilience, we must not overlook the horrific international failure to address humanitarian disasters, blatant breaches of international law, the absence of justice, and the violation of human rights of Palestinian people, most notably in the Gaza Strip. "
He stated that the terrible events in the Gaza Strip demonstrated the lack of equitable global governance and the inadequacy of international accountability mechanisms. This failure, he claims, contributes to the continuation of the occupation, the worsening of the Palestinian people's suffering, and the absence of optimism. "As a result, we have scheduled today's meeting to amplify the voice of conscience and use the instruments of politics and legislation to defend the rights of our fraternal Palestinian people," he explained.
The Omani Council delegation took part in the Arab Group's coordination meeting. The meeting addressed the hosting of the Union's 20th session, the nomination of Executive Committee members, and the appointment of four representatives from Arab councils and parliaments to the Union's standing committees.
During the meeting, it was decided that the Sultanate of Oman and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia would continue to represent the Arab Group on the Executive Committee. The meeting also approved holding the next meeting of the Executive Committee in the Islamic Republic of Mauritania.
