Complex Hand Surgery At Khoula Hospital Hailed As Medical Milestone

Muscat: A specialised medical team from Khoula Hospital's Hand Surgery Department has successfully reattached a severed hand and two fingers for a resident who suffered a workplace accident. The complex procedure lasted a continuous 14 hours.

Dr. Ahmed bin Mohammed AlWahaibi, Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon and Head of the Hand and Microsurgery Department at Khoula Hospital, stressed that the operation's success depends on two crucial factors: an immediate response and proper preservation of amputated parts according to global protocols, followed by quick and safe transport to the hospital's advanced hand surgery and replantation center. These procedures greatly enhanced the likelihood of regaining motor and sensory function in the hand.

He emphasized that treating multipart amputations and reconnecting microscopic blood vessels and nerves necessitate highly qualified specialists and cutting-edge technology, demonstrating the capability and development of Omani medical teams.

The procedure included bone fixation, sorting of damaged microvessels, removal of dead tissue, and accurate reconnection and suturing of ligaments and arteries to ensure good blood flow and gradual functional rehabilitation of the reattached hand.

Dr. Al-Wahaibi verified that the patient was in stable condition following surgery, having completed the crucial postoperative phase without issues such as infections or blood clots. The patient was released after a brief stay, during which encouraging signs of sensory and motor recovery were noticed.

He stressed the significance of preventing hand injuries by awareness and caution, particularly when using sharp instruments or machinery. Following safety rules, wearing protective equipment such as gloves, and ensuring that equipment is completely turned off before maintenance are all critical. Timely medical care and proper management of amputated limbs significantly improve the likelihood of successful treatment and functional recovery.

Dr. Al-Wahaibi emphasized that this medical breakthrough contributes to the expanding list of surgical accomplishments in Oman and provides new opportunities for treating complicated instances, improving healthcare quality for both citizens and residents.
