The "Bisya and Salut Archaeological Visitor Centre" in the Wilayat of Bahla in the Governorate of Al Dakhiliyah has welcomed approximately 7,546 visitors, both local and international, since its opening in February 2023 until the end of May 2024, as per data from the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism.
The establishment of this center was part of the initiative to prepare archaeological sites for tourism and to provide visitors with insights into the historical significance of the Bisya and Salut archaeological area, as well as the history of archaeological exploration in the region.
Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Tamimi, Director of the Bisiya and Salut Archaeological Site Department, highlighted that the center showcases the history of human settlements in the region and the cultural exchanges between Oman and ancient civilizations.
Furthermore, Al Tamimi emphasized that the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism's efforts to restore the site, conduct archaeological excavations, and maintain the archaeological sites in the Bisya and Salut region were crucial in establishing the center and initiating the rehabilitation of pathways to these sites.
He also mentioned that the center features informative panels summarizing the history of archaeological research in the region, the different settlement patterns, cemetery structures, and trade relationships with neighboring civilizations, all supported by the findings of archaeological excavations. The center is equipped with modern interactive screens to enhance the communication of information to visitors.
The head of the Bisya and Salut Archaeological Site Department, Al Tamimi, stated that the center operates through its different departments to support the ministry's work in surveying, scientific documentation, and regular monitoring of archaeological sites. Additionally, the center oversees archaeological missions and offers assistance to researchers and enthusiasts in the fields of history and archaeology.
Al Tamimi also mentioned that the archaeological exhibits are categorized into three main sections and halls: the Bronze Age Hall, the Iron Age Hall, and the World Heritage Sites Section. These sections showcase 344 diverse artifacts carefully chosen to complement the scholarly texts in the galleries. The artifacts represent various periods of human settlement in the region and shed light on the scale and nature of economic activities related to agriculture, trade, and mining. The exhibits include tools, stone and pottery utensils, seals, and bronze artifacts.
The Director of the Bisya and Salut Archaeological Site Department confirmed the establishment of a field classroom designed to host workshops, camps, and programs that combine seasonal and field applications. In 2023 AD, 13 events were carried out, and a diverse program package was prepared for the year.
