ATP Rankings: Novak Djokovic ends year at No.1 for record 8th time

London: Novak Djokovic, the twenty-four-time Grand Slam champion, concluded the 2023 ATP season by securing the year-end No. 1 position for an unprecedented eighth time.

Djokovic's remarkable season included triumphs at three out of the four Grand Slam tournaments. He emerged victorious at the Australian Open in January, the French Open in June, and the US Open in July. In September, he clinched the US Open title, bringing his overall Grand Slam count to a record-breaking 24. Additionally, he achieved a second-place finish at Wimbledon.

The 36-year-old Serbian tennis star showcased his dominance by winning the ATP Finals in Turin, engaging in a fierce battle with Carlos Alcaraz throughout the season.

Following his eighth ATP Finals victory, Djokovic commenced his historic 400th week as the top-ranked player in the ATP Rankings on Monday. Only Roger Federer, with 310 weeks, has surpassed the 300-week milestone. Djokovic's 15 year-end Top 3 finishes tie him with Federer for the most in history. Currently, Djokovic has spent a total of 402 weeks at the pinnacle of the ATP Rankings and is guaranteed to maintain his position until the week of January 22.

Carlos Alcaraz secured a second consecutive year-end Top 2 finish, while 20-year-old Holger Rune concluded the season at No. 8. This marks the first time since 2000, when Marat Safin (No. 2) and Lleyton Hewitt (No. 7) achieved the feat, that two players aged 20 or younger have finished the year in the Top 10. Daniil Medvedev secured the year-end No. 3 spot for the second time in three years.

Jannik Sinner, 22 years old, reached a career-high No. 4 ranking and claimed his first ATP Masters 1000 trophy in Toronto. On the other hand, Andrey Rublev, who emerged victorious at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Monte-Carlo, finished within the Top 5.

Stefanos Tsitsipas achieved his fifth consecutive year-end Top 10 finish, while German player Alexander Zverev made an impressive comeback to the Top 10 after recovering from a devastating ankle injury in June 2022. Polish tennis player Hubert Hurkacz secured a year-end Top 10 finish for the third consecutive year after leading the Tour in aces with a total of 1.
