Amit Narang, an officer of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) from the 2001 batch, has been designated as the next Ambassador of India to Slovenia, as announced by the Ministry of External Affairs. Currently, he holds the position of Ambassador to the Sultanate of Oman and is anticipated to transition to his new role soon.
In a press release issued on Thursday, the Ministry stated, "Shri Amit Narang (IFS: 2001), presently Ambassador of India to the Sultanate of Oman, has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the Republic of Slovenia." The Ministry further indicated that he is expected to take up this assignment in the near future.
Born on January 28, 1975, Narang began his tenure as Ambassador to Oman on October 24, 2021. Prior to this role, he led the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) Division within the Ministry of External Affairs, where he managed India's bilateral relations with significant maritime partners, as noted by the Embassy of India in Oman.
Narang has also held the position of Chief Vigilance Officer at the Ministry and was responsible for India's consular and visa policies, focusing on initiatives to support the welfare of the Indian diaspora abroad.
Throughout his career in the Indian Foreign Service, Narang has acquired an Advanced Diploma in the Chinese language and has served two terms in the People's Republic of China—first from 2003 to 2007, where he worked on bilateral economic and commercial relations, and again from 2016 to 2018 as the Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of India in Beijing.
Additionally, Narang played a pivotal role as India's lead negotiator at the United Nations concerning the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and the Addis Ababa Action Agenda.
Narang managed the United Nations portfolio within the Ministry of External Affairs from 2010 to 2013 and served as Counselor at the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations in New York from 2013 to 2016. In this capacity, he was part of the Indian negotiating team on climate change, representing India at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) meetings held in Cancun (Mexico), Durban (South Africa), Doha (Qatar), Lima (Peru), and Paris (France), which led to the adoption of the Paris Agreement (COP21) in 2015.
While in New York, Narang also played a significant role in the adoption of the historic UN Resolution that established June 21 as International Yoga Day, as reported by the Embassy of India in Oman.
