Women Professionals Vital For Tourism Sector Development

The seminar titled 'Women in Tourism' shed light on the crucial role that women play in advancing Oman's travel and tourism sector, ultimately contributing to the country's GDP and aligning with the goals of Oman Vision 2040.

During the one-day event, attended by experts in the field, the focus was on the importance of empowering women in travel and tourism. This empowerment is seen as essential for Oman's efforts to attract more tourists and create more employment opportunities.

Dr. Hashil al Mahrouqi, the CEO of Omran Group, emphasized the significance of women in the tourism industry, stating, "We must utilize all available resources to empower women in an industry that holds untapped potential in this beautiful country." Oman is currently facing a challenge of youth unemployment, with over 65,000 young individuals without jobs, according to the Ministry of Labour. With approximately 600 hotels, the tourism sector has the potential to significantly contribute to job creation, making it a vital component of Oman's economic landscape.

The seminar, held under the patronage of Her Highness Sayyidah Dr. Basma al Said, witnessed discussions on encouraging women to exert greater efforts in the tourism industry.

Dr. Lubna al Mazroei, the Tourism Investment Manager at Oman Investment Authority, highlighted the proven contribution of women in the sector and urged confidence in their abilities for overall development.

"We should strive to fully develop the professional growth of women's potential in the tourism industry, and efforts are underway to ensure greater participation of women in all areas of travel and tourism," she said.

In terms of GDP, tourism made up 2.5 percent in 2022, marking the highest contribution in Oman's history. However, Oman Vision 2040 has set a target to raise tourism's GDP to a minimum of 8 percent and increase the number of tourists to 16 million.

The 'Women in Travel and Tourism' seminar, organized by Al Safa Press and Publishing, featured seven speakers advocating for greater opportunities for women in the tourism sector. Mariam al Araimi, Omran's Human Capital Business Partner, emphasized the vital role of women in showcasing Oman on the global stage.

"The importance of women in the hospitality industry cannot be underestimated. They possess the skills and capabilities to promote our culture and heritage, leaving a lasting impression on international tourists and ensuring a memorable experience," she stated.

The growing demand for female tour guides, both domestically and internationally, was highlighted, with Dr. Rokhshad Tavakoli emphasizing the need to encourage more women to pursue this profession.

There were also calls to focus on the academic aspect, preparing female students to become future leaders in the tourism industry. Aisha al Shueili, Senior Lecturer at Oman Tourism College, stressed the importance of empowering students for their future roles as leaders.

During the seminar, the importance of women's active involvement in shaping the national strategy for tourism development was emphasized by the presenters. Naifeen al Bahrani, a Tourism Consultant, specifically highlighted the advantages that women bring to tourism management, such as their patience and attentiveness.

Amelia German, a Tour Guide, emphasized the significance of cultural tourism in any tourism campaign, as it promotes local heritage and history. Additionally, Zahra al Lawati, an adventure and outdoor tour specialist, pointed out the potential growth factor of adventure tourism, highlighting the allure of Oman's rugged terrains.

The seminar concluded with a discussion on the role of 'Sustainable Tourism' in realizing Oman Vision 2040. This included the importance of government plans, community involvement, and the impact of local businesses on tourism development.
