Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has officially signed a new contract, which will keep him at the club and ensure his leadership role continues for the upcoming seasons—almost seven and a half years after he first joined Anfield, as reported on the official Liverpool FC website.
This news follows closely on the heels of Mohamed Salah's agreement to new terms with the club last week.
"I'm very happy, very proud," Van Dijk expressed to Liverpoolfc.com.
"There are so many emotions running through my mind right now as I talk about this," he continued.
"It's a proud moment, filled with joy. It's simply incredible. The journey I've experienced in my career, and now being able to extend it for another two years at this club, is amazing, and I couldn't be happier," he stated.
"It was always Liverpool for me. That was my mindset, my plan, and it has always been Liverpool," he affirmed.
"I had no doubts that this is the right place for me and my family. I consider myself part of Liverpool. Someone referred to me recently as an adopted Scouser, and I take great pride in that; it truly makes me feel good," he added.
Van Dijk made his move to Liverpool from Southampton in January 2018 and quickly became recognized as one of the top defenders in the world. His strong presence in defense has been crucial to the team's achievements, contributing to their collection of seven major trophies during his tenure at the club.
The Dutch defender has played 314 matches and netted 27 goals so far. His collection of honors features the Premier League, Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, and two League Cups.
On an individual level, Van Dijk was awarded the PFA Players' Player of the Year in 2019 and has been selected for the Premier League Team of the Year four times. That same year, he was the runner-up in the Ballon d'Or voting, just falling short to Lionel Messi.
Having been named club captain in the summer of 2023, the 33-year-old aims to enhance his legacy as he guides Liverpool in their quest for more trophies.
