US Open: Sinner Sets Up Medvedev QF Clash; Minaur, Draper March Into Final Eight

New York: The reigning world number one, Jannik Sinner, has secured a quarterfinal match against Daniil Medvedev following his victory over local favorite Tommy Paul at the ongoing US Open on Tuesday.

The world number one and the current Australian Open champion emerged victorious over Paul with a score of 7-6(3), 7-6(5), 6-1. Despite facing a challenging situation, with points at stake and battling from two sets down in the first, Sinner showcased remarkable shotmaking and power on the baseline.

This achievement marks Sinner's rare accomplishment of reaching the quarterfinals in at least one of the four Grand Slam events in the current season. He joins the prestigious group of men's singles players who have reached this milestone since 2000, including notable names such as Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal, David Ferrer, Stan Wawrinka, and Andre Agassi. Djokovic has achieved this feat a record eight times, according to ATP.

Following the match, Sinner expressed his sentiments, stating, "It is a tremendous honor to play on this court. The evening session is always a highlight. I want to thank everyone for their support; it's truly amazing. I believe we both did not play our best tennis due to the weather conditions, which were somewhat breezy and windy. However, I am very proud of our performance. Today's opponent was tough, but I am pleased to be advancing to the next round."

Sinner and Medvedev have previously met in the Wimbledon quarterfinals this year, with Medvedev emerging victorious in five sets and extending their rivalry's lead. Sinner also defeated Medvedev to secure the Australian Open title.

Medvedev, the fifth seed and the 2021 US Open champion, continued his campaign in 2024 with a win over Nuno Borges by a score of 6-0, 6-1, 6-3 in a match that lasted one hour, 51 minutes. Throughout the match, Medvedev maintained a strong lead, with the exception of a brief period when he trailed by a break early in the first set. Since 2018, Medvedev has accumulated 268 wins on hard courts, surpassing any other player in tour-level wins. His closest competitor is Andrey Rublev with 210 wins.

Vladimir Medvedev has achieved success in all three ATP Head to Head encounters with Borges, securing victories over him in both the Australian Open and the Halle tournament this year.

Alex de Minaur has clinched his third consecutive quarterfinal appearance in a major tournament on Monday, defeating his Australian counterpart Jordan Thompson with a score of 6-0, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 in the round of 16 match. The 10th-ranked player maintained a commanding lead from the outset, demonstrating the agility necessary to capitalize on opportunities presented by drop volleys and flat groundstrokes over the course of two hours and 57 minutes.

With his 40th victory on the tour this year, Alex has climbed above Djokovic to secure the seventh position in the ATP Live Race to Turin. At the age of 25, Alex has had a remarkable year, achieving quarterfinal finishes at the French Open and Wimbledon, as well as winning titles in Acapulco and 's-Hertogenbosch. He is now aiming for his first-time qualification to the ATP Finals.

His adversary in the upcoming match will be Jack Draper, who has made history by reaching his first major quarterfinal with a victory over Tomas Machac of the Czech Republic with scores of 6-3, 6-1, 6-2.
