Tourism Ministry Issues Advisory Against Visits To Wadi Shab

Muscat: The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism of Oman has issued a cautionary notice to both individuals and entities, advising them against the organization of trips or visits to Wadi Al-Shab, located in the South Al Sharqiyah Governorate.

This notice, which will remain in effect until October 31, 2024, is issued in response to the escalating water levels in the vicinity, with certain sections of the wadi experiencing flooding, especially in areas that are prone to low elevation.

The surge in water levels is attributed to the recent tropical depression, Sayyal, which struck the region on Tuesday. The Wilayat of Sur was the most affected, recording rainfall of over 227 mm, followed by Qurayat (170 mm), Jaalan Bani Bu Ali (117 mm), Muscat Governorate (112 mm), and Masirah (96 mm), as per data provided by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources.

In the face of these severe weather conditions, rescue teams from the Civil Defence and Ambulance Authority have been mobilized to attend to 23 emergency cases spread across the governorates of Al Sharqiyah South and Muscat.

Although the tropical system is showing signs of weakening, the Oman Meteorological Office has issued a warning that the system is still active. While the intensity has decreased, there is an expectation of light to moderate rainfall, especially in the Dhofar Governorate on Thursday.

The primary objective of this advisory is to safeguard public safety by mitigating the risks posed by the elevated water levels in Wadi Al-Shab during these adverse weather conditions.
