Student Company Develops Smart Device To Track Shipping Containers

Al Musanaa: The student enterprise "Servo" based at the University of Technology and Applied Sciences in Al Musannah has made notable strides by creating an innovative smart device intended for placement within shipping containers to oversee their condition while being transported or stored.

Shajan Mohammed Al Alawi, the CEO of this student-led company, detailed that the device is outfitted with sensors that can gauge essential environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, pressure, and vibration, ensuring the protection of the contents inside the container. Additionally, the device incorporates a tracking feature that accurately identifies the container’s location during both land and maritime transport, thereby improving the precision of shipment tracking.

Furthermore, she mentioned that the device is linked to a digital platform that provides real-time information, showcasing a 3D visualization of the container as well as a timestamped record of alerts for any irregular readings observed.

She highlighted that this innovation has been presented at various exhibitions and events centered around innovation, including the Injaz Oman Student Company Exhibition 2025, the business incubator organized by the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority in South Al Batinah Governorate, the Higher Education Institutions Exhibition (GEDEX 2025), and the "Industry for an Entrepreneur" forum hosted at the University of Technology and Applied Sciences in A’Rustaq. The device attracted considerable attention from attendees at these venues.

She specified that the target audience for the device includes logistics firms, ports, factories, and any organizations dependent on land or maritime shipping that necessitate meticulous monitoring of their products within containers. She elaborated that marketing strategies involve direct interaction with these companies through field visits where introductory presentations are conducted. This method, she pointed out, cultivates trust and nurtures robust relationships with potential clients via personal engagement and immediate feedback to questions.

It is notable that the student group "Servo" achieved first place in the Innovastartup 2025 competition for the best emerging student company and was featured among the top 60 student firms in Oman in the Injaz Oman 2025 competition. Moreover, it stands out as the sole student enterprise from the University of Technology and Applied Sciences in Al Musannaa to qualify for the Student Company Exhibition 2025.
