South Africa Reports Second Mpox Death This Week

A tragic development has occurred in South Africa as another individual has succumbed to the viral infection known as mpox, according to the health ministry's announcement on Thursday. This unfortunate event took place less than 24 hours after the first death was reported.

The latest victim was identified as a 38-year-old man who had been admitted to a hospital in the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) province. He presented with a range of symptoms including extensive lesions, headache, fatigue, oral ulcers, muscle pain, and a sore throat.

On Wednesday, the man's test results confirmed that he had contracted mpox. Regrettably, he passed away on the same day in KZN, as stated by Foster Mohale, the spokesperson for the national health department.

With this recent fatality, the total number of laboratory-confirmed mpox cases now stands at six, with two deaths since the initial case was recorded five weeks ago.

It is important to note that mpox primarily spreads through close physical contact. While most cases are mild, it is crucial to recognize that this infection can be fatal.
