Muscat: Eight months after unveiling its ambitious $250 million expansion initiative in Oman, SNF, the global leader in polyacrylamide with 9,000 employees and $5 billion in sales, has made significant strides in fulfilling its promise to position Oman as a regional center for polymer production and research. The company has officially launched the advanced initial phase of polymer production, with civil construction activities commencing this month. With over two decades of presence in the Sultanate of Oman, this project underscores the company’s commitment to sustainability, innovation, and local value creation.
Groundbreaking: construction of the polymer facility begins
With construction approval now in place, SNF has initiated the groundwork for its cutting-edge initial polymer manufacturing phase, marking a crucial milestone in the project’s timeline and showcasing its capability to swiftly move from planning to implementation. The facility, which is set to produce high-performance anionic polymers, will significantly enhance chemical enhanced oil recovery (EOR) capabilities and address the rapidly increasing demands of regional clients.
The construction phase is anticipated to advance rapidly, with the plant expected to create local job opportunities, generate in-country value, and position Oman as a significant player in the Middle Eastern polymer market.
“This represents a remarkable advancement,” stated a senior executive at SNF. “We have transitioned from concept to real progress on the ground. The backing from the Omani government and our local partners has been crucial in achieving this milestone.”
RSTC Oman Approaches Finalization
Alongside the construction of the polymer plant, SNF’s Regional SNF Technical Centre (RSTC Oman) in Muscat is in the concluding phases of its development. The finishing touches are being applied, and the installation of state-of-the-art laboratory equipment is progressing smoothly. The RSTC is anticipated to launch in early 2025, aligning with its goal of becoming SNF’s research and development center for the GCC. This facility will enhance innovation in the oil and gas sector within the region, concentrating on polymer research for enhanced oil recovery (EOR), with a particular emphasis on carbonate reservoirs, Water Shut-Off, and other advanced technologies. Additionally, the center will offer essential technical support throughout the duration of SNF’s projects, promoting efficiency and sustainability.
A Driver for Local Development
In alignment with its dedication to enhancing in-country value, SNF has emphasized local hiring and the development of talent. By partnering with Omani universities and institutions, SNF is nurturing the future generation of specialists in oilfield technologies and sustainable practices. “The RSTC represents more than just a technical facility,” stated the RSTC manager. “It serves as a center for knowledge sharing and skill enhancement, generating lasting value for Oman’s workforce and industry.”
A Promising Outlook for 2025
With the polymer plant and RSTC advancing as planned, SNF is set to reach several significant milestones in 2025. The first quarter will feature the official inauguration of the RSTC, which will demonstrate its state-of-the-art facilities and emphasize SNF’s dedication to innovation and sustainability. Additionally, the commencement of the initial phase of polymer production in Oman will mark a pivotal moment in 2025, reinforcing Oman’s status as a key player in the regional polymer market. This event will attract close attention from SNF Top Management, reflecting its importance to both the industry and the region. This achievement highlights SNF’s commitment to providing innovative solutions that meet the changing needs of the oil and gas sector.
This upcoming phase further illustrates SNF’s unwavering focus on innovation, sustainability, and the creation of local value, solidifying its role as a frontrunner in the polymer sector for the oil and gas industries.
