Shura Council Participates In APA Session In Azerbaijan

Baku: The Shura Council took part in the 15th plenary session of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA) held in Baku, Azerbaijan, on Wednesday, themed “The Role of Parliamentary Diplomacy in Enhancing Multilateral Cooperation.”

Delegations from various Asian countries attended the session.

Khalid bin Hilal Al Maawali, Chairman of the Shura Council, emphasized the significance of the chosen theme regarding parliamentary diplomacy's role in fostering multilateral cooperation in Asia. He noted that this subject is crucial for promoting collaboration, solidarity, and unity among nations and regional and international organizations, serving as a fundamental basis for understanding, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence.

He remarked that the session's theme aligns with the ongoing global developments and challenges, as well as the rising incidents worldwide.

He highlighted that the Sultanate of Oman has historically served as a bridge between continents, cultures, and nations, which has played a vital role in shaping its national identity and its commitment to dialogue and openness.

Furthermore, he stated that Oman views parliamentary action as extending beyond the mere creation of laws and legislation; it also involves fostering dialogue and discussion. Through parliamentary diplomacy, collective efforts can be mobilized to tackle global challenges and advocate for peace, development, and sustainability.

The Chairman of the Shura Council urged Asian parliaments to adopt a decisive and unequivocal position regarding the rights of the Palestinian people, who are a vital part of the broader Asian community. He emphasized the necessity of dialogue to foster security and stability in the region, advocating for the Palestinian people's claims to their legitimate rights as enshrined in international law, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Security Council resolutions, and other international norms and charters. He also highlighted their rights to security, self-determination, and the establishment of a fully sovereign state on their territory.

Al Maawali stated that the forced displacement of Palestinians and the appropriation of their lands is not a viable path to peace; instead, it undermines and jeopardizes all aspects of international security, stability, and peace.

During the 15th plenary session of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA), the Sultanate of Oman was granted full membership after participating as an observer for nearly eighteen years since its accession in 2006. This development marks a new chapter in enhancing Oman's role in the regional and international parliamentary landscape, facilitating its involvement in discussions aimed at fostering peace, understanding, and coexistence among nations.

While attending the 15th plenary session of the APA, the Chairman of the Shura Council engaged in bilateral meetings with leaders of the participating parliamentary councils. Al Maawali explored avenues for strengthening ties between the Sultanate of Oman and their respective countries.
