Shamar Joseph Lights Up Home Test Debut As 17 Wickets Fall On Opening Day

In the first match of their Test series, the West Indies and South Africa engaged in a captivating exchange of wickets, with South Africa emerging victorious, setting the stage for an uncertain second match.

The duo of Joseph and Seales were instrumental in the dismissal of South Africa, contributing eight wickets to the total, but the hosts' initial batting performance was lackluster, falling to 56/6 by the close of the day, as confirmed by the ICC.

However, veteran all-rounder Jason Holder (with a score of 33*) spearheaded a comeback effort, leading the West Indies to a final score of 97/7, still trailing by 63 runs from South Africa's first innings total.

Following their victory in the toss for the second match of the ICC World Test Championship series, South Africa found themselves under pressure from the formidable bowling attack of Shamar Joseph and Jayden Seales.

Joseph's first over saw Tony de Zorzi's stumps collapse due to a powerful inswinger, setting the tone for the day. Joseph then struck again in the same over, dismissing Aiden Markram and Temba Bavuma, reducing the visitors to 20/3.

David Bedingham and Tristan Stubbs managed to rally South Africa with a solid partnership, but it was Holder who delivered the decisive blow by forcing an outside edge with a wide delivery to Stubbs.

Joseph returned after the lunch break to dismiss Bedingham and Wiaan Mulder, followed by Seales with another wicket of Kagiso Rabada. Joseph then achieved his third five-wicket haul in Test cricket with the crucial dismissal of Kyle Verreynne.

Despite their efforts, South Africa were eventually bowled out for 160, marking one of their lowest scores in Test cricket against the West Indies.

In a similar vein, the previous year in Centurion, South Africa were bowled out for 116 against the West Indies, setting a new low for their Test total against them, as noted by the ICC.

Wiaan Mulder (with figures of 4/18) led a remarkable comeback in the final session, helping South Africa reduce the West Indies to 97/7 at stumps, thereby setting the stage for an intense finish to the day.
