Muscat: Assigned by His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, HH Sayyid Asa'ad bin Tarik Al Said, the Deputy Prime Minister for International Relations and Cooperation Affairs, and Personal Representative of His Majesty the Sultan, participated in the third virtual Leaders’ Summit of the Voice of the Global South on Saturday.
In his address, Sayyid Asa'ad underscored the imperative for collaboration in the face of the diverse and grave challenges that threaten the security and stability of the world. The recent period has been marked by political and economic turmoil, as well as armed conflicts and escalating regional tensions. He emphasized that sustainable resolutions to these challenges can only be achieved through dialogue, cooperation, and collective action.
Sayyid Asa'ad further stated, "The Palestinian issue demands a just and equitable resolution from this assembly and the international community at large."
He affirmed the Palestinian people's right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent state on their territories, aiming for peace and stability in the region, which has endured the continuous illegal Israeli occupation of Palestinian and Arab lands since 1967.
"Israel has contravened all pertinent UN resolutions, ignored international law, and violated international human rights," he added.
He also highlighted the Sultanate of Oman's vision for 'Oman Vision 2040,' which outlines a strategy for achieving a diversified and sustainable economy centered on innovation and knowledge. He believes that the future necessitates not only economic development but also environmental protection and the well-being of the entire society. At the forefront of these efforts is investment in sectors such as the blue economy, renewable energy, and modern technology.
He declared that the Sultanate of Oman has set ambitious objectives to achieve zero carbon neutrality by 2050, through comprehensive strategies for renewable energy and enhancing energy efficiency. He stressed that the Sultanate of Oman is of the conviction that realizing the sustainable development goals for all requires collective cooperation at both regional and international levels, for the establishment of prosperous and sustainable economies in the global south.
The Deputy Prime Minister for International Relations and Cooperation Affairs and Special Representative of His Majesty the Sultan, affirmed the Sultanate of Oman's support for the principles of this summit and highlighted the importance of constructive collaboration with allies in the global south to achieve shared objectives and the aspirations of their peoples for development, prosperity, security, and stability.
The summit deliberated on a broad spectrum of issues affecting developing nations, with a particular focus on climate change and its impact on developing countries.
Furthermore, the summit explored collaborative strategies to achieve sustainable development by promoting economic growth that is inclusive and environmentally sustainable, with an emphasis on realizing the Sustainable Development Goals.
He also extended special congratulations to the friendly Republic of India on the occasion of its Independence Day.
The meeting was presided over by Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India, with the participation of several heads of state and government.
