Muscat: The Royal Opera House Muscat (ROHM) has announced the winners of The Violetta Project: A Journey into Fashion Design, a unique initiative developed in partnership with the Scientific College of Design and inspired by its recent staging of Verdi's La Traviata.
This project challenged fashion design students to examine Violetta's character through the lens of costume design, allowing them to reinterpret her emotional journey in unique and creative ways.
The Royal Opera House Muscat continues to open its doors for educational and cultural enrichment programs that make opera and the arts more accessible.
This project encouraged students to look at opera from a different perspective, increasing their understanding of narrative, character, and historical context.
Following a series of planned seminars that helped students convert Violetta's dramatic development into graphic design, two outstanding participants, Nihal AlKhaziri and Shadan AlMalki, were chosen for their excellent work.
Their designs captivated the judges by capturing the complexity and evolution of Violetta's character, combining narrative insight with creative fashion interpretation.
The initiative encouraged both technical and artistic development by providing young designers with professional narrative and character development skills while also instilling a greater appreciation for opera and its emotional complexity.
Acclaimed performances
The initiative coincided with two highly acclaimed performances of La Traviata on May 1 and 3, conducted by the famous Plácido Domingo with the Orchestra and Chorus of Teatro Carlo Felice, directed by Marta Domingo.
The staging featured Juliana Grigoryan in her impeccable and emotionally gripping debut as Violetta, as well as Yusif Eyvazov's outstanding tenor voice as Alfredo, providing the ideal duet. The performance included beautiful pictures and flamenco-inspired choreography by the Antonio Gades Company.
