Revenues Exceed OMR 850 Million In Oman's Telecommunication Sector

The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) reported that the total revenues of the telecommunication sector in 2023 reached approximately OMR 851 million, marking a 12 percent increase from the previous year.

During a media briefing, the TRA discussed various statistics related to the telecommunications and postal services sectors, highlighted completed projects in 2023, assessed the performance of fixed and mobile telephone networks, and outlined upcoming projects.

According to the TRA, the telecommunications sector witnessed growth in mobile phone subscriptions by 3 percent, mobile broadband by 5 percent, fixed telephone by 3 percent, and fixed broadband by 5 percent in the Sultanate of Oman in 2023.

Furthermore, the TRA revealed that the total number of employees in licensed companies within the sector stood at 4,167 workers, with an impressive Omanization rate of 94 percent.

Moreover, the TRA noted a significant increase in the number of licensed postal companies, which rose by 31 percent to reach 63 companies in 2023. The total number of employees on permanent contracts in these companies reached 1,676 workers, with an Omanization rate of 78 percent.

By the end of 2023, the total revenues of licensed postal companies in the Sultanate of Oman amounted to around OMR 20.6 million, reflecting a 14 percent increase compared to 2022.

The completion of various significant projects has been confirmed by the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) over the past year. These projects include the implementation of controls for investment in fiber optic network infrastructure, the establishment of requirements for emergency management plans in the telecommunications sector, and the introduction of controls for public auction procedures for mobile phone numbers.

Furthermore, the TRA has successfully collaborated with the Civil Aviation Authority and operators to develop an early warning system in the coastal wilayats. Additionally, Starlink Muscat has been granted a first-class license to offer fixed public telecommunications services.

In the current year, the TRA is dedicated to enhancing telecommunications services in key sectors such as education, health, tourism, industry, transportation, environmental sustainability, and innovation. The focus also extends to scientific research and development in the field of communications.

The TRA emphasizes that the transition from third-generation services to fourth and fifth-generation services, along with the allocation of new frequency bands to telecommunications companies in Oman, will significantly enhance telecommunications services in the near future.

The CEO of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, His Excellency the Engineer, has announced that in 2024, the Authority will conduct 29 field surveys across state centers to assess the quality of telecommunications services provided to beneficiaries.
