Nizwa: In an effort to safeguard its rich geographical heritage filled with historical landmarks, the Governorate of Al Dakhiliyah has initiated a series of projects aimed at the development and restoration of archaeological sites.
These initiatives are designed to create new opportunities that strengthen national identity and offer sustainable economic benefits to the community, positioning the governorate as an appealing destination for both investors and tourists.
Sheikh Hilal Said Al Hajri, the Governor of Al Dakhiliyah, highlighted the governorate's commitment to establishing a robust foundation for a knowledge-based economy that fosters sustainable development, ultimately transforming the region into a vibrant cultural and commercial hub.
He noted that investing in cultural heritage not only bolsters national identity but also plays a crucial role in building a sustainable economy that aligns with societal aspirations and enhances competitiveness in the knowledge-driven era.
Additionally, he mentioned that engaging the local community in the restoration and operational processes creates new job opportunities that support the knowledge economy.
In an interview with the Oman News Agency, he stated that the governorate places significant emphasis on its unique advantages, particularly its rich historical background, and has launched projects aimed at revitalizing heritage sites through the restoration and development of archaeological locations, with an investment exceeding OMR3.78 million.
He also pointed out that the Governorate of Al Dakhiliyah is collaborating with relevant authorities to ensure that these projects adhere to strict standards that maintain the archaeological integrity of the sites while promoting their long-term sustainability.
He noted that these initiatives align with national strategies aimed at enhancing the economy, as they play a crucial role in bolstering the knowledge economy through the provision of advanced tourism facilities and services.
He elaborated that the projects focused on the development and restoration of archaeological sites within the governorate have resulted in a remarkable increase in visitor numbers, with attendance at castles and forts rising from 312,200 in 2023 to over 415,000 in 2024, marking a growth rate of 33 percent.
The Governor mentioned that ongoing projects include the rehabilitation and enhancement of Bahla Souq, as well as the development of the entrances to Jabreen and Basya, which are currently 5 percent complete.
He highlighted that the Jabreen Entrance Development Project is designed to enhance the area surrounding Jabreen Fort, a key historical site in the Sultanate of Oman, and encompasses various development aspects, including the expansion of parking facilities to better accommodate visitors.
He stressed that Al Dakhiliyah Governorate is actively involved in urban renewal initiatives in Al Hamra Governorate, particularly through the “Old Al Hamra Neighbourhood Renewal” project, which integrates the region’s historical significance with contemporary economic needs, thereby aiding in the preservation of Oman’s distinctive architectural heritage.
The revitalized neighborhood is anticipated to serve as a benchmark for sustainable urban renewal.
He also mentioned that a contract has been finalized for the development of the Misfat Al Abriyeen neighborhood project in Al Hamra.
The initiative encompasses the development of a glass bridge that will connect the entrance to the valley area, thereby improving access for visitors to nearby natural attractions. Additionally, a secure pedestrian walkway equipped with a guardrail will be constructed to enhance the pedestrian experience and bolster public safety. The pathways will be paved, and heritage lighting will be installed to enrich the aesthetic appeal of the neighborhood.
He noted that the paving of the Al-Aqar neighborhood and the restoration of the Al-Aqar wall are progressing swiftly, with completion rates currently at 20 percent and 60 percent, respectively.
He further stated that these two projects are designed to rejuvenate historical sites, enhance the visitor experience, and create a favorable environment for investment in the tourism and cultural sectors.
