Dubai: Mohsin Naqvi, the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), has been appointed as the new president of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), as announced by the governing body for cricket in Asia on Thursday.
In a statement released on the same day, the ACC confirmed that Naqvi would take on this role immediately.
"Mr. Mohsin Naqvi has officially taken over as the President of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC). Having served as the PCB Chairman since February 2024, he will begin this esteemed position on April 3, 2025. His appointment marks a significant new era in the leadership of Asian cricket," the ACC's statement read.
Upon his appointment, Naqvi described Asia as the "heartbeat of world cricket."
"I am truly honored to take on the presidency of the Asian Cricket Council. Asia is the heartbeat of world cricket, and I am dedicated to collaborating with all member boards to enhance the growth and global impact of the sport. Together, we will create new opportunities, promote greater cooperation, and elevate Asian cricket to new heights. I also wish to express my heartfelt gratitude to the outgoing ACC President for his leadership and contributions during his time in office."
Naqvi takes over from Shammi Silva, the former President of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). In reflecting on this transition, Silva expressed his gratitude for the ACC community:
"It has been an honor to serve as President of the Asian Cricket Council. The unwavering dedication of our member boards collaborating has been crucial in enhancing the ACC's reputation throughout the region. I would like to thank my predecessor, Jay Shah, Chairman of the ICC, whose leadership enabled the ACC to achieve significant milestones, such as securing the highest-ever value for the ACC Asia Cup commercial rights, establishing a new events pathway structure, and fostering the ongoing growth of cricket in Asia. As I step down, I am confident that under Naqvi's skilled leadership, the ACC will continue its impressive journey and flourish," Silva stated.
