Pact Signed To Strengthen Oman's Space Industry

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) oversaw the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the US-based satellite launch company ABL Space Systems and Etlaq spaceport. CAA President Naif Al-Abri and Ana Escrogima, the United States Ambassador to Oman, were present at the ceremony.

ABL and Etlaq will collaborate under the MoU to investigate launching ABL’s RS1 launch vehicle from the Etlaq Spaceport, introducing orbital satellite launch capabilities to the Gulf region. The primary focus of the initial project will be to assess local logistics and site construction, as well as to develop regulatory and export control frameworks with both the US and Oman governments.

The Etlaq Spaceport, situated at 18-degree latitude, is anticipated to become operational in 2027 and will offer broad orbital access from sun-synchronous to low inclination orbits. The nearby commercial airport and deepwater port in Duqm will provide essential logistical support for these satellite missions. The spaceport will enhance the Sultanate’s space sector and position Oman as a leader in the regional and global space industry.

Harry O'Hanley, CEO of ABL, expressed his satisfaction with signing the MOU, stating, "The Gulf region space ecosystem is expanding significantly, with new investments and ambitious goals in exploration, science missions, and constellation deployment. These endeavors will benefit from local access to space, and we are thrilled about the opportunity to collaborate with Etlaq and the Sultanate of Oman to provide this capability."

His Highness Sayyid Azzan bin Qais Al Said, CEO of Etlaq, emphasized the significance of this partnership, saying, "We are delighted to reach this milestone with ABL Space Systems, which underscores our dedication to developing the space sector in Oman. We believe that this MOU is a step in the right direction for positioning our spaceport as a global choice for established rocket companies."

This agreement represents a significant advancement towards achieving Oman’s objectives in developing the local space sector and enhancing international collaboration.
