Muscat: The number of people registered in the Shifa app for post-mortem organ donation has increased by 37 percent this year compared to last year, with a total of 11,262 registrations. In the previous year, the Ministry of Health's app had 7,092 registered individuals.
To emphasize the significance of organ donation, the Ministry of Health, through the National Programme for Organ Transplant Department, observed Omani Organ Donation Day on Tuesday. The event was honored by the presence of HH Sayyid Kamil Fahd Al Said, Secretary-General at the Secretariat-General for the Council of Ministers.
The purpose of the event is to raise awareness within the community about the significance of organ donation as a compassionate act and a generous initiative that serves as a viable solution for individuals experiencing organic failure, such as kidney failure, liver failure, and other ailments that afflict millions of patients worldwide.
During the ceremony, Dr. Ahmed Al Busaidi, Director of the National Organ Transplant Programme Department, delivered a presentation highlighting the achievements of the past year, particularly the notable increase in the number of kidney transplant operations, with a total of 17 kidneys successfully transplanted.
Additionally, the corneal transplant programme was initiated, leading to a surge in the number of individuals registered with the Shifa application for post-mortem organ donation.
Furthermore, the event recognized and honored various living organ donors as well as the family members of deceased organ donors. In collaboration with the Donation Transplantation Institute in Spain, a three-day organ donation training course was launched.
Moreover, the Ministry of Health has implemented a program that enables individuals to express their desire to donate organs after death by registering through the Shifa application.
Organ donation is an exceptional humanitarian act that individuals can undertake during their lifetime or even after their passing. By donating organs, one directly contributes to saving the lives of patients grappling with organ failure, granting them a renewed chance at life. The only way to save these patients is through the selfless act of organ donation.
