Dr. Mohammed Awadh Al Hassan, Permanent Representative of the Sultanate of Oman to the United Nations in New York, reiterated Oman's support for a statement made by the Arab Group regarding "Item 63 of the UN agenda on the use of the Veto," which was presented by the United Arab Emirates (UAE)’s Permanent Representative.
Al Hassan expressed Oman's disappointment over the United States of America's veto against the State of Palestine's legitimate request for full UN membership. He emphasized Oman's commitment to peace and highlighted the importance of establishing a Palestinian State and granting it full UN membership as a crucial step towards resolving the conflict in the Middle East region.
Furthermore, Al Hassan criticized the obstruction of Palestine's request, stating that it undermines security and peace in the region and diminishes the credibility of the Security Council. He emphasized the principles of rejecting colonialism and upholding the right to self-determination as fundamental values of the United Nations.
In the statement from Oman, Al Hassan highlighted the following:
Over 70 years have passed since the beginning of the illegal and illegitimate Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories. Despite the cruelty of the occupation and the repeated violations of international law, international humanitarian law, and international legitimacy resolutions by the occupying state, the Palestinian people continue to resist. The atrocities committed against the Palestinian people in the West Bank and Gaza Strip serve as clear evidence of the UN Security Council's failure. Due to the unjust stances of certain countries, the Security Council has been unable to uphold international peace and security, let alone make peace a tangible reality in this crucial region.
Al Hassan emphasized that Palestine is a recognized reality by a significant number of countries worldwide. He stated that it is only a matter of time before Palestine achieves full membership in the United Nations. No single country should obstruct the will of the entire international community.
In his address, Al Hassan called on Oman's partners to reassess their decisions and positions, advocating for a just and comprehensive peace for all peoples in the Middle East. He urged everyone to contribute to achieving peace that puts an end to the cycle of violence, restores security and stability to this vital region, preserves its cultural heritage, and brings an end to decades of bloodshed, destruction, and unjust blockades.
Al Hassan further emphasized Oman's unwavering support for the Two-State Solution and peaceful coexistence. He made it clear that Oman firmly opposes any plans that do not result in a fair and lasting peace or provide a sustainable resolution to the Palestinian conflict. Additionally, he stated that Oman will persist in advocating for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, including their right to achieve full United Nations membership.
