Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman is currently engaged in the 17th session of the Conference of the Parties to the Basel Convention, the 12th session of the Conference of the Parties to the Rotterdam Convention, and the 12th session of the Conference of the Parties to the Stockholm Convention. These meetings are taking place at the Geneva International Conference Centre (CICG) and will continue until May 9.
Discussions during these sessions will focus on various matters related to how the three conventions align with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and the goal of creating a toxic-free future through the proper management of chemicals and hazardous waste.
The agenda includes strategies for effectively implementing the provisions of these agreements by fostering collaboration among different stakeholders. Topics will also cover ways to reduce waste and pollution while achieving both economic and social well-being. Furthermore, the discussions will highlight the importance of engaging the private sector in minimizing environmental effects through the adoption of innovative techniques and a scientific approach to production processes.
Additionally, the meeting will cover issues related to the provision of technical support and financial resources, as well as fostering international collaboration among the parties involved in the three conventions. This includes establishing memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with the United Nations Environment Programme, the Conference of the Parties, and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
Participation in the meetings includes representatives from over 190 countries, along with observers and delegates from international governmental organizations, non-governmental organizations, and civil society.
