Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, has joined the global community in commemorating International Tourist Guide Day, celebrated annually on February 21.
This event aims to acknowledge the significant contributions of tour guides in delivering historical, cultural, and tourist information about various landmarks and attractions.
The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism honors this international occasion to recognize the essential role of Omani tour guides in transforming visits to Oman into inspiring experiences, providing visitors with extensive information and unforgettable memories.
Anwar Mohammed Al Mahrouqi, Head of the Tourism Guidance Department at the Ministry, emphasized the necessity of showcasing the crucial role that tour guides play in enhancing the tourism sector.
He noted that tour guides act as ambassadors for Oman, serving as a gateway for tourists to appreciate the country’s historical, natural, cultural, and environmental attributes.
As of the end of 2024, the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism has issued a total of 1,175 licenses for tourist guides, according to Al Mahrouqi.
He mentioned that English is the most common language among licensed guides, with some also certified in other languages such as French, German, Spanish, Italian, and Russian.
Al Mahrouqi further stated that 101 Omani female guides have been licensed as part of the ministry’s initiative to involve both genders as partners in executing its plans and strategies aimed at advancing the tourism sector.
