Oman Intensifies Efforts To Regulate Foreign Workforce

Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman is intensifying its efforts to regulate the foreign workforce through a significant crackdown. In the past eight months, nearly 12,000 illegal workers have been apprehended, with over 9,700 of these individuals being deported for violations of the Labour Laws.

Retired Brigadier General (Rtd), Said bin Sulaiman Al Asimi, CEO of the Security and Safety Institution, has confirmed that the inspection unit possesses the authority to shut down sites that repeatedly violate Omanisation regulations. He also encouraged young job seekers to pursue Omanised professions within operating companies to demonstrate their competencies in the labor market. Contrary to common misconceptions, there are numerous Omanised professions with high demand, not just those with lower income potential.

Furthermore, he emphasized that the unit will continue to conduct regular inspections and monitoring visits to Omanised professions across all activities to ensure compliance with the Omanisation policy.

"The institution has been granted royal trust through Royal Decree No. 18/2024, elevating the status of judicial police for some employees of the inspection unit. This development significantly strengthens the institution's ability to activate the labor inspection system, ensuring all parties are committed to implementing government decisions related to Omanisation rates and the established Omanisation standards."

Key Points:

- Establishment of Inspection Unit: A specialized Inspection Unit has been established under the Security and Safety Institution to oversee compliance with labor laws.

- Focus on Omanisation: The unit is dedicated to enforcing Omanisation rates and limiting the employment of expatriates in certain professions.

- Enhanced Enforcement: The unit has been granted judicial police powers to bolster its enforcement capabilities.

- Development of Facilities: Labour care facilities are being developed with improved security and technology.

- Training and Development: Personnel are undergoing comprehensive training to effectively handle inspection and enforcement tasks.

This comprehensive approach highlights Oman's commitment to safeguarding the rights of Omani workers and ensuring equitable labor practices within its jurisdiction.
