New Delhi: The Embassy of the Sultanate of Oman in New Delhi hosted a cultural symposium to commemorate the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Oman and India.
The symposium explored the extensive commercial and cultural connections between the two nations, which have spanned over 5,000 years.
In partnership with Jamia Millia Islamia, the event emphasized the significance of Omani ports such as Muscat, Sohar, and Qalhat in maritime trade, the influence of cultural exchanges on language, arts, and architecture, as well as the contributions of Indian communities in fostering pluralism and religious tolerance.
Ambassador Ashok Kumar Attri shared insights from his time in Oman, discussing the reasons behind the settlement of Indian families there, his role as the head of the Indian mission in Muscat, and the enduring bonds between the two countries.
Shri L. Prashant Pise, Deputy Director General of the Indian Council of World Affairs, remarked on the historical depth of India-Oman relations, highlighting that their diplomatic ties are founded on friendship, mutual benefit, and coexistence.
Pise also presented a research paper examining the history of Omani-Indian relations and the role of pluralism and cultural diversity in enhancing mutual understanding.
Omani researcher Dr. Saud Abdullah Al Zadjali contributed a working paper discussing the historical foundations of the strong bilateral relationship from both Western and Eastern viewpoints. His paper addressed India’s strategic role as a consistent partner in the Arabian Gulf and its relationships with diverse peoples, aimed at achieving common interests and fostering cultural communication.
The symposium attracted Indian officials, former ambassadors to Oman, academics, and students keen on exploring the cultural and historical ties between Oman and India.
The symposium emphasized the necessity of advancing cultural and scientific dialogue between the two nations. It highlighted the importance of fostering economic and educational collaboration to strengthen historical ties and create new opportunities for future rapprochement between the Sultanate of Oman and India. -ONA.
