Geneva: The Council of Oman is participating in the 149th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) General Assembly meetings, scheduled to take place from October 13 to 17, 2024, in Geneva.
The delegation from Oman, led by Khalid Hilal Al Maawali, the Chairman of the Shura Council, will engage in discussions on the pivotal role of parliaments in addressing a wide range of regional and international challenges and making pertinent decisions.
The delegation from Oman is expected to be actively involved in numerous sessions, including those with the Standing Committee for Sustainable Development, the Standing Committee for Democracy and Human Rights, the Association of Secretaries-General of National Parliaments, the Standing Committee for International Peace and Security, the Standing Committee on United Nations Affairs, the Forum of Women Parliamentarians, and the Forum of Young Parliamentarians of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
In addition to the formal sessions, Al Maawali will represent Oman in the Arab Group's coordination meeting, which will focus on the preparations for the IPU's 37th Emergency Conference, set to occur on October 15. This meeting is anticipated to address the aggression of Israeli occupation forces against the State of Palestine and the Lebanese Republic, aiming to explore solutions to halt such aggressive actions.
Furthermore, Al Maawali has been appointed as the head of the emergency panel within the Arab Group at the IPU, tasked with addressing emergency issues submitted to the IPU for further analysis by the Algerian People's National Assembly and the Palestinian National Council.
