Oman Announces Two-Month Ban On Kingfish Trading And Fishing

Muscat: The Ministry of Agricultural Wealth, Fisheries, and Water Resources (MAFWR) has issued a directive to enforce a two-month moratorium on the harvesting and commercial transactions of kingfish within the Sultanate of Oman. This measure, mandated by Ministerial Resolution No. (230/2014), is scheduled to be implemented from August 15 to October 15, 2024.

The primary objective of this directive is to safeguard the kingfish population and promote sustainable fishing methodologies. The Ministry has called upon all individuals engaged in the fishing industry, including fishermen, fish transporters, and associated enterprises, to adhere to the ban and to register their existing stocks of kingfish prior to the commencement of the ban.

Motivation: Preservation of the kingfish population and the enforcement of sustainable fishing practices

Parties Affected: Fishermen, fish transporters, entities involved in the fishing, transport, procurement, sale, and export of kingfish

The Ministry has underscored the necessity for collective effort from all relevant parties to prevent legal repercussions for any violations.
