OHRC Participates In Conference On Human Rights From An Islamic Perspective

Muscat: Under the leadership of Professor Rashid bin Hamad Al Balushi, the Oman Human Rights Commission took part in the inaugural International Conference on Human Rights from an Eastern Perspective, which took place in Tehran and Qom, located in the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Baqir al-Olum University, in collaboration with the Islamic Culture and Relations Organization affiliated with Iran’s Ministry of Culture, organized the event. A diverse group of attendees was present, including representatives from various national human rights bodies, regional and global organizations, as well as scholars and researchers well-versed in this area.

The purpose of the Conference was to provide a thorough Eastern viewpoint on human rights, rooted in the profound cultural and civilizational legacies of Islamic and Eastern heritages. It also aimed to showcase values and principles that stem from different Eastern cultures, offering a counter-narrative to the predominant Western frameworks often seen in human rights discussions.

Topics discussed during the Conference emphasized the necessity of an Eastern approach to human rights, particularly amid ongoing global uncertainties and crises, significantly addressing the circumstances in the occupied Palestinian territories. The Conference also delved into various historical and cultural contexts from different nations, possibilities for enhanced regional collaboration, and the evolving interpretations of human rights viewed through an Eastern lens, encompassing their philosophical, cultural, and social underpinnings.

At the event, Professor Rashid bin Hamad Al Balushi delivered an academic paper. His discussion centered on the significance of organizing a human rights conference that embraces an Eastern outlook, particularly given the current global adversities and crises. Additionally, he underscored Oman’s unique historical and cultural contributions in the realm of human rights.

The delegation from the Commission included Plenipotentiary Minister Aqil bin Alawi Ba Omar, who serves as a member of the Commission, along with Hassan bin Ahmed Al-Ajmi from the Commission’s Technical Secretariat.
