Muscat: The Health Ministry of Oman's National Organ Transplant Programme achieved a significant medical achievement by moving two kidneys from donors who were brain-dead (located at the Royal Hospital) to the Sultan Qaboos University Hospital within the University Medical City.
Dr. Qassim Mohammed Al Jahdhami, who leads the Organ Donation Department at the National Organ Transplant Programme, shared with the Oman News Agency (ONA) that the initial transplant procedure was conducted on October 22, 2024, with the second transplant procedure taking place on November 5, 2024.
He mentioned that the initial kidney transplant occurred at the Royal Hospital, and the second kidney transplant was performed at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital. The kidney donation procedures were carried out on two patients with chronic kidney failure, who did not have living donors.
Dr. Qassim highlighted the importance of timing in the success of these operations, as organs can only be kept viable for a certain period before they are transplanted.
He reported that the first transplant took 34 minutes, and the second took 27 minutes, emphasizing that the time taken for the transplant reflects the effectiveness of the medical teams involved in planning and executing the procedures.
