Muscat: The Nama Electricity Distribution Company (NEDC) has facilitated a smooth transition for electricity consumers moving from the postpaid to the prepaid system.
Speaking during Comex 2025, officials indicated that customers will not need to install a separate or new meter for the prepaid system; the new smart meters allow for a switch using the same device.
Furthermore, for the convenience of Nama prepaid electricity customers who recharge or top up their accounts via the mobile app or online, the funds will be automatically credited to their accounts. "There will be no requirement to manually enter the PIN into the prepaid meter. Additionally, the balance can be monitored online at any time and from any location."
In other announcements, Nama revealed the integration of a domestic solar system into the grid through smart meters.
Moreover, new subscribers can have their electricity supply activated in mere seconds without the need for human intervention.
As of the end of 2024, the deployment of smart electricity meters throughout the Sultanate of Oman surpassed the 75 percent milestone, according to NEDC.
The number of smart meters installed by NEDC increased dramatically from 244,088 in 2021 to 1,008,958 in 2024.
