Liverpool: Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes expressed a blend of emotions after the Red Devils put forth a commendable effort to secure a point at Anfield against Liverpool, as reported by Sky Sports.
In an unexpected turn of events, Manchester United surprised many by challenging the league leaders, Liverpool, on their home turf.
The match saw momentum shift back and forth until the final whistle sounded at Anfield. Ultimately, it concluded in a 2-2 draw, but Manchester United found several positives to take away, especially in light of their recent performances.
Overwhelmed with feelings, Fernandes described the outcome as a "good" and "fair result," while also reflecting on the missed opportunity to claim all three points.
"Criticism has been warranted, as our position in the table indicates. We have dropped too many points. Even today, we cannot be satisfied with a draw because we need points more than they do. It was a solid result, and we could have even secured a win at the end, but it remains a fair outcome," Fernandes stated to Sky Sports.
Under the guidance of new head coach Ruben Amorim, Manchester United's journey has been a mix of highs and lows. Prior to their visit to Anfield, the team was struggling at 14th place following a defeat against Newcastle United.
With only seven points separating them from the relegation zone, Amorim's squad needed to leave with something to bolster their campaign.
Through a determined performance, Manchester United managed to earn a point. The Portuguese midfielder called on his teammates to maintain such levels of performance in the upcoming matches.
I am quite disappointed because if we can perform like this today at Anfield against Liverpool, who are currently leading the league and arguably the best team in the Premier League this season, why can't we replicate this level of play every week? Ultimately, I delivered a solid performance overall, but I believe we need to demand much more from ourselves to achieve anything significant this season, he remarked.
After a scoreless first half, the intensity of the match increased when Lisandro Martinez opened the scoring with a powerful strike. Liverpool responded quickly, equalizing just seven minutes later with a goal from Coady Gakpo.
Luck favored Liverpool when De Ligt committed a foul in the penalty area following a header from Alexis Mac Allister. The Egyptian star, Mohammed Salah, converted the penalty, giving Liverpool a 2-1 advantage.
Despite being behind with only 20 minutes remaining, Manchester United rallied and brought the game back to level terms. Ten minutes later, Amad Diallo scored the equalizer after receiving a well-placed cross from Alejandro Garnacho. Harry Maguire had an opportunity to secure a victory, but he missed the chance, resulting in a draw.
With this point, Manchester United climbed to 13th place with 23 points, preparing to face Southampton at home next week.
