Law enforcement officials, in conjunction with the Royal Oman Police and the Public Prosecution, discovered a group of Asian expatriates engaged in the storage, distribution, and sale of non-smoking chewing tobacco.
This operation is part of the ongoing efforts by the Consumer Protection Authority (CPA) to combat the proliferation of banned substances that pose health and safety risks to society.
The details of the operation are as follows: The CPA received information about expatriates in the Wilayat of Muttrah who were in possession of, trading, and selling various types of non-smoking chewing tobacco. Following the issuance of a search warrant by the Public Prosecution, the CPA, through the Department of Regulation and Monitoring of Markets, formed a team to apprehend the offenders in collaboration with the Public Prosecution and the Royal Oman Police.
The operation resulted in the seizure of 804 bags and boxes of different types of chewing tobacco, as well as sums of money. This activity is in violation of Decision No. (256/2015) prohibiting the circulation of non-smoked chewing tobacco. The offenders were detained, interrogated, and legal actions were taken against them, leading to their referral to the Public Prosecution.
The CPA reiterates its commitment to enhancing market surveillance to safeguard the health and safety of consumers, and to prosecute violators. It also encourages consumers to report any market violations they observe through various communication channels.
