Islamabad: Jason Gillespie, the former Australian fast bowler who took on the role of head coach for Pakistan's Test team in April, has resigned from his position as of Thursday.
Aqib Javed, who serves as the head coach for Pakistan's men's white-ball teams, will assume the head coach role for the Test squad in the upcoming series against South Africa.
In Gillespie's final assignment, he led the team to a comeback victory in a three-Test series against England at home in October, overcoming an initial 1-0 deficit.
Currently, Pakistan sits seventh in the ICC World Test Championship points table, with four Tests left in the current cycle.
Under the leadership of Shan Masood, the team is no longer in contention for a place in next year's WTC Final. South Africa, leading the points table, has solidified its position as a strong contender for the final after a recent 2-0 victory over Sri Lanka at home.
To conclude their 2023-25 WTC cycle, Pakistan is set to host the West Indies in January.
At present, Pakistan is engaged in a three-match T20I series against South Africa, followed by an equal number of ODIs. The two-Test series will commence at Centurion on Boxing Day.
