International Conference Titled 'Humanitarian Law In View Of Islamic Jurisprudence' Held In Muscat

Muscat: The third international conference titled “International Humanitarian Law in View of Islamic Jurisprudence” commenced on Monday at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Delegates from 20 countries are participating in this three-day event, organized by the College of Sharia Sciences, which runs from February 17 to 19.

The opening ceremony was presided over by Sheikh Abdulmalik Abdullah Al Khalili, Chairman of the State Council, and is attended by various ministers, senior government officials, and international guests.

The conference seeks to examine the interplay between international humanitarian law and the tenets of Islamic jurisprudence, focusing particularly on issues related to armed conflict and the safeguarding of human rights during wartime.

A total of 167 abstracts and 90 research papers will be presented by scholars from Oman and other countries.

The discussions will address the role of Islamic jurisprudence in fostering international peace and protecting the rights of those affected by armed conflicts. Additionally, the conference will delve into the fundamental principles of international humanitarian law and explore ways to enhance their application within the legal framework. It will also emphasize the contributions of Muslim scholars in formulating a theoretical basis for these regulations, aiming to mitigate the effects of warfare on individuals and communities.

The conference will cover four key areas within the realm of international law and jurisprudence: the protection of victims of armed conflicts, permissible combat methods, mechanisms for establishing individual and international criminal responsibility, and the contributions of Ibadi jurisprudence to the regulations governing armed conflicts.

The conference will feature representatives from the International Committee of the Red Cross, various government agencies, and experts in international humanitarian law and Islamic jurisprudence, including researchers and academics.

This event emphasizes the significance of incorporating Islamic law to tackle modern issues associated with armed conflicts. The aim is to raise awareness of the critical role that international humanitarian law plays in safeguarding the rights of all individuals during wartime. Additionally, it will explore the relationship between Islamic law and international law.

The inaugural and subsequent editions of this conference were hosted by the College of Sharia Sciences in 2018 and 2023.
