New Delhi: In January 2025, India's total exports, which include both goods and services, reached $74.97 billion, an increase from $68.33 billion in January 2024, as reported by the Commerce Ministry.
Conversely, the trade deficit expanded to $2.67 billion, up from $0.39 billion, as imports rose significantly to $77.64 billion, compared to $68.72 billion in the same month last year.
Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal emphasized the strong export performance from April 2024 to January 2025, noting, "Our exports during this period have grown by 7.21 percent, with an increase of $46 billion compared to the same timeframe last year. Merchandise exports alone contributed $5 billion."
He further stated, "In January, our non-petroleum exports surged by 14.47 percent, indicating robust growth in both merchandise and services exports."
Key sectors showed remarkable performance, with rice exports soaring by 44.61 percent, underscoring India's leadership in the global rice market. Additionally, the gems and jewellery sector experienced a resurgence, with exports increasing by 15.9 percent in January, signaling a significant recovery.
Despite facing geopolitical tensions and tariff obstacles, India's export sector has demonstrated resilience, showcasing the effectiveness of the country's trade policies and the demand in global markets.
As of January 15, India's exports recorded a 6.03 percent increase during the April-December 2024 period, totaling approximately $602.64 billion, compared to $568.36 billion in the same period of 2023.
Merchandise exports for the first nine months of FY2024 amounted to $321.71 billion, reflecting a slight increase of 1.6 percent from $316.65 billion the previous year. Notably, non-petroleum exports in December 2024 rose by 5.05 percent, reaching $33.09 billion, up from $31.50 billion in December 2023.
