ICJ To Hold Hearings Next Month On Israeli Occupation's Humanitarian Obligations Toward Palestinians

The Hague: Next month, in April 2025, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) will conduct hearings concerning Israel's humanitarian responsibilities towards Palestinians, following its decision to obstruct aid deliveries to Gaza.

Previously, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution urging the ICJ to provide an advisory opinion on this issue. According to a statement from the court, the hearings are set to commence on April 28.

The resolution, introduced by Norway, received overwhelming support and requests the ICJ to clarify the actions Israel must undertake to ensure the uninterrupted delivery of critical supplies essential for the survival of Palestinian civilians.

Despite humanitarian aid flowing into Gaza after a ceasefire was established in January, Israel resumed its blockade on aid deliveries at the start of March 2025.

Norway's proposal was a reaction to a recent Israeli law that effectively suspended the operations of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) since late January, prohibiting its activities in both the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Just two days ago, the United Nations emphasized the pressing need to avert a resurgence of hunger in Gaza, as Israel continues to restrict the entry of humanitarian assistance into the region.
